WBC's Dane and Roxana meet swimmer and humanatarian Marcos Diaz

This past weekend, our island of Providenciales was the proud host of the 1st Eco seaswim- Race for the Conch.

The guest of honor was Marcos Diaz from Dominican Republic, a well known world class long distance swimmer and athlete. Among Marcos’ numerous achievements are: 2005 the World Record for crossing back and forth the Strait of Gibraltar; 2006 1st place in the longest competition in Bhagirathi River in India (81K); 3 years consecutive champion in the International Crossing of the Toroneos Gulf in Greece; Swimming in the Passage Boca Chica ; Double Swim around the Island of Manhattan NY (97K)

Marcos holds the highest ranking ever by a Dominican swimmer in the world rankings of International Swimming Federation

Marcos achievements do not stop in the water. In 2004 he established the Marcos Diaz Foundation dedicated to help the children with limited economic resources in Dominican Republic and around the world. His goal this year is to ‘connect’ the continents by swimming various straits and passages and use his name and records to attract attention to child mortality and hopefully end poverty by 2015.

West Bay Club was one of the sponsors and the host of the welcome cocktail party for the organizers and participants. After the greetings and a brief introduction by the main organizer, Marco Travel, the microphone was passed to Marcos who thanked everyone for the hospitality and  briefed the audience on his goals and his Foundation work.

The 1-mile sea swim took place the following day and it was great success thanks to the organizers and the participants. Even though it was a much shorter race than Marcos normally participants in, he won.

Marcos and his wife stayed with us at WBC, so we had the opportunity to interact, ask questions and show off the resort not only to them, but also to members of the press from the Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine and other participants.

“…Wow! Another awesome trip to Provo! It is an addiction – don’t know how we would get through a year without a visit to our favorite vacation place. The beaches, water, diving, snorkeling, excursions, and people we meet are still the best! There are so many picture perfect places around the Island so as usual, I had to take a few pictures.  This will give you an idea of what we did & where we went! http://islandgirl43.shutterfly.com

Let us do the shopping for you before you arrive

Let us do the shopping for you before you arrive

Wouldn’t  it be great if you arrived at your vacation accommodations with a full stocked fridge and kitchen filled with all your favorite snacks, drinks and other goodies? Let West Bay Club take care of the shopping for you, so you don’t have to make that extra trip to the supermarket when you first arrive.

Our guests love our custom provisioning service, especially when you arrive on a evening flight. It’s perfect for families, too, as we can stock up on kid’s food and those breakfast essentials so you don’t have to worry your first morning with us.

We charge a nominal provisioning fee and can take your order via email in advance. The local supermarket stocks just about anything you could want, from fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, fish, cold rinks, dry goods – even a complete beer, wine and spirits selection.

So don’t arrive to an empty cupboard – we’ll make you feel like you walking in to your own fully stocked kitchen. And you spend more time on the beach!

Yo, ho, ho. Try our local rum!

June 4th, 2010

BambarraSnifter.jpg.w300h399The Caribbean and rum go together like peanut butter and jelly so next time you visit us here in the Turks & Caicos, make sure to sample our own local version of the tropical elixir: Bambarra Rum.

Bambarra comes in a couple of different varieties, including a recently introduced coconut flavor. It’s great as a sipping drink straight up on the rocks, or as part of truly tropical concoction. Ask our bartenders at the Atlantic Bar & Grill to whip you up something!

Bambarra has an intersting historical connection, too, as it is named for the first settlement in the Turks and Caicos (on the island of Middle Caicos, where you can still visit Bambarra Beach).  The town here was named for a village in West Africa where the descendants came from – and these were actually people destined for a life of slavery until a ship wreck landed them here and they were granted freedom under British law.

The name of the ship they sailed on was the Trouvadore, which has been the subject of a large exploration project, which you learn about at our National Museum in Grand Turk. And, true to form the newest version of Bambarra, the smooth tasting 15-year old version, will be called Trouvadore. It’s coming soon31296_124870330869462_124644527558709_185566_350518_s

Bambarra is available at our bar and also at The Wine Cellar not far from WBC, as well at the duty free store in the departure lounge of the airport.
Salut!

World champion swimmer to visit WBC

May 23rd, 2010

As part of WBC’s sponsor ship of the upcoming “Race for the Conch” Eco-Swim, we are proud to be hosting one of the world’s greatest competitors in this sport: Marcos Diaz.  Marcos is from the nearby Dominican Republic and is considered one of the top athletes in open water swimming. He holds several records and is a favorite in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Marcos is also in the midst of an incredible swimming achievement:

Wordl Champion Marcos Diaz

World Champion Marcos Diaz

he is literally swimming between the five continents of the world! You can follow his progress on his web site.

So a one-mile swim in the calm clear waters of Grace Bay will be nothing for him! The Eco Swim is scheduled for July 10 and WBC is offering special discounts to any one who competes. Also, Marcos will met and greet guests and other participants at a pre-race cocktail reception on July 9 at the West Baby Club from 5-7PM.

Hope some of you can make it down to join us for this fantastic sporting event

Fools Regatta always a good time

The annual Fool's Regatta attracts all sorts of boats and characters

The annual Fool's Regatta attracts all sorts of boats and characters

One of the great events on the Turks & Caicos calendar is the annual Fools Regatta. It’s part sailing event, part beach party and entirely fun. And it takes place right down the beach from West Bay Club.

Here’s the scoop on the 2010 edition, the 20th annual:

Saturday, June 19th at the Bight Kids’ Park.  Event kicks off at noon.

The day long event features lot of local food, local boats and local music.

One of the highlights of the day is the Resort Challenge Race, which pits the staffs of many of the beachfront resorts against each other in a Hobie Cat race (yes, WBC is one of the early favorites!)

There’s sailing competition among local sloops in three different classes. These graceful handmade crafts are really fun to watch and the skill of the local sailors is impressive

And then there’s the Great Raft Race run by the Volunteer Fire Service — always an entertaining competition.  Ten rafts are already entered for this event that epitomizes the “Fools Regatta” as teams construct rafts from just about any type of material (beer kegs?)

There are kids games, beach shenanigans and a Tug-O-War competition.  The family friendly event concludes at sunset with an awards ceremony.
